So What’s With The Memory In A Memory Foam Mattress Pad Topper?

To make the viscoelastic mattress pad memory foam have what’s called "memory" certain chemicals need to be added. You start with a basic polyurethane foam and then add chemicals in increase the density and weight. When these chemicals are added you have the creation of a foam that is now visco-elastic which is a non-toxic foam that responds to heat and pressure. Now each piece of foam used in a memory foam mattress pad is NOT created equal. There are different grades to the foam and these grades help to categorize the foam in the viscoelastic memory foam mattress pad.

Making The Grade

Visco-elastic foam falls under a very specific definition: In order for a memory foam bed pad to be considered visco-elastic it must yield to body heat and pressure and once that pressure and heat is removed it should begin to immediately reform back into the visco memory foam mattress pads original shape. The foam is graded based on it’s ability to be visco-elastic and its durability. The grading of the foam breaks down into two categories: Weight and Indentation Load Deflection.

The Weight In a Visco Memory Foam Mattress Pad

The weight of memory foam is measured by the density in pounds per square foam. As mentioned above the weight is determined by the amount and the type of chemicals added to the foam. The higher the number of chemicals added the higher the density and most of the time the higher the weight in the cal foam king memory pad. The density measured here with weight will not, however, determine how solid the material is. Most of the densities of memory foam mattresses (full size mattresses) use a density of anywhere from two to five pounds.

Indentation Load Deflection

This rating tells you specifically how hard or soft the foam is going to be. If a memory foam mattress pad has a 35% ILD rating then it is telling you the number of pounds that are needed to get a 35% compression of a 5 inch thick foam using a fifty square inch indentation. For example: 50 pounds ILD foam is an indication that the material took fifty pounds of pressure to indent the foam 50%. So basically the higher the Indentation Load Deflection the firmer the foam will be on your memory foam mattress pad.
