Foam Crib Mattress

A foam crib mattress is not a good idea for an infant. The memory foam is much to soft to be used in an infant’s crib. You need a much firmer mattress to support the baby to prevent any suffocation. Once the baby reaches the toddler ages then you can purchase a memory foam mattress for their bed.

Here are some other important tips you should remember when considering a bed for your baby’s crib.

Make sure the mattress fits perfectly into the crib. You do not want a loose mattress as this can lead to the baby being trapped underneath it or even worse being suffocated by it. Make sure any mattress you buy fits so tightly into the crib that you can’t get more than one finger in between the mattress and the crib.

You can purchase a standard crib size mattress (they measure around 52" by 28"). The mattress should also not be thicker than six inches (there is a foam crib mattress that comes with dual sides that matches this thickness but you want to wait until the baby is a toddler before you purchase it). Also to be extra careful you want to measure the mattress yourself just to be on the safe side. You want to take this extra measure because you can’t always trust the manufacturer’s measurements that they have listed on the product’s label (back in 2008 Simmons had to recall 20,000 mattresses for this very reason).

Make sure the mattress is very firm. This is another reason why you don’t want a foam crib mattress because they are just too soft. The mattress for an infant must be firm to support the entire body. It also has to keep the fitted sheets nice and tight. If the fitted sheets slip then you risk a suffocation hazard.

The quality of the mattress is also of upmost importance. Try and find a mattress that has been manufactured of one hundred percent organic materials. This can guarantee that
the product isn’t made of any dangerous chemicals and that it’s safe for the baby. Also usually the organic materials are hypo-allergenic so you don’t need to worry about an allergic reaction. Try to purchase a crib mattress that’s over $100. Any mattress under that amount may not be of the highest quality.

So these are tips you should be aware of when looking for a mattress for you baby. Remember that the foam crib mattress should not be purchased until the baby is at least in
the toddler stage.
